The National Museum of African American History and culture was conceived by a bipartisan coalition of senators, congressmen, and former presidents. Its first report was released in April 2003, and the commission recommended that the museum be located at the Washington Monument. It also recommended a temporary location in the Arts and Industries Building.

In 2006, the museum’s design was chosen by a team led by Freelon Group/Adjaye Associates/Davis Brody Bond. The museum’s interior is composed of five large gallery spaces, and the building’s lowest level is dedicated to interpreting the history of the civil rights movement. The museum also offers educational resources and opportunities for participation in educational programs.

The museum’s exhibits include items that represent a wide variety of African American cultures. Visitors can learn about African American military experiences from the Revolutionary War to the present, or examine the history of African American music. Other exhibits include an airplane used by the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, a boombox owned by Chuck D of Public Enemy, and a shawl given to Harriet Tubman by Queen Victoria. The museum also acquired a Cadillac rented by Chuck Berry, and a guard tower from the infamous Louisiana prison Angola.

The museum’s permanent collection includes more than 37,000 objects. The artifacts represent the history of African Americans and their military contributions, as well as their influence on society. The museum also has a number of works by prolific artists. Some of the artists whose work can be seen at the museum include Nat Turner and Charles “Buck” Taylor. Other artists include Quincy Jones, who is on the museum’s advisory board.

The museum’s exhibitions are often accompanied by performances or workshops. In addition, the museum has free mobile apps for visitors. The apps allow users to explore the museum’s online collection. The museum also hosts ceremonies and public gatherings.
